Note: In the menu, press space to select a track and hold to start the game.

Tap Tap Racer is a racing game where you drive as fast as you can tap your spacebar!

The faster you tap space, the faster you go, but make sure to slow before turns to stay on track!

Three racing tracks to choose from, three opponents to beat. Put the pedal to the medal and let your computer take the wheel!

Controls:

  • Tap Space repeatedly to accelerate
  • Hold Space to break

This is an entry for One Button Jam 2024, where you create a game that can be controlled by one button only! The theme is "bug", which is exactly what you are driving.

so much tapping! it's fun - although my hand can also not hold up with so much tapping. would be fun to see this in a multiplayer context.

Splitscreen multiplayer is absolutely on my list. For networked multiplayer, maybe at some later point.

Definitely would have preferred a holding system to rev up, my carpal tunnel does not appreciate how competitive I am

Understandable, but by holding you can only either accelerate or not, with tapping you can control the level of acceleration. I am trying to optimize the mechanics though, so stay tuned for updates.

Putting the "car" in "carpal tunnel".

Jokes aside, fun game!

So its confirmed I'm bad at racing games no matter how simple XD
Love what youve managed to implement, personally my space bar seems to get a little confused been holding and spamming. Maybe a rythymish system could work well?

First time I heard about the space bar having issues with high frequency taps, maybe it's your keyboard?

Rythm-based input doesn't quite fit what I had in mind. The inspiration are classic slot car races, but since your average keyboard can't read pushing strength, I go with pushing frequency instead.

I am sure though with a little practice you will become a world class tap tap racer :D

Awesome, race music slaps.

Could use a little of tuning on the slide-punishment:
I found that just spamming works for most corners - speed drops to 90 from 150 whereas to not drift on  a lot Id be going 100 which is slower overall.

Fun little minigame, had 3 races.

Fun racing game, I love the graphics and movement. My favorite map is Sandy Rocks! I think it would be cool to add a minimap in the bottom of the screen. Great Job!

Agreed. I'd also like a rear view mirror so you have a better understand on how close the other cars are (especially yellow :D)

They didn't make into the jam release, but if the game hits well enough I might add some features afterwards.

Split screen multiplayer comes to mind...
